Making it Happen Pt 2: Tech

In the following I’m gonna detail the ‘nitty gritty’ of all the tech that I did for my show back on July 3rd.

My Signal Flow was as follows: (SIGNAL FLOW meaning the path that sound takes from the source to your ear)

Microphone > Interface > Laptop > Interface > Speakers

Starting at the actual source, I was using SM58 Microphones, the industry-standard vocal microphones that you see everywhere. These are sturdy, workhorses, responsible for live audio performances for decades. They also come at a very reasonable price, basing at $100 even.

SM58

From the microphone is an analog signal, short for electrical. That signal travels through a cable called an XLR cable, specific for audio, into the audio interface I was using, the Arturia Audiofuse. From there, the electrical audio signal from the microphone becomes digitized and plugged in via USB to my laptop. The signal must be digitized, otherwise, it wouldn’t be able to be processed by a computer.

From there, I made unique Ableton Live projects for each performer, the following was for girlonline.

The Ableton Project. The White files are the recorded vocals from the show

From this project, I had the opportunity to process the incoming signal from the microphone. I tailored this individually for each artist, with this one specifically, I had some autotune plugins, and added additional reverb and delay to have a better vocal, which was also unique to each song.

After the signal went into the computer and got processed, it then came back out of the computer into the Audiofuse, this time, alongside the backing tracks you can see colored in.

From there the signal got routed to the two speakers we had set up. And that’s it!
